The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated today in the European Parliament, speaking about the state of the European Union, that the Commission will propose measures to strengthen competition and reduce bureaucracy.
She noted that the measures include speeding up the issuance of permits, accelerating projects of strategic interest, and reducing the bureaucratic burden for small and medium-sized enterprises.
She added that the time has come for an agreement against additional rules and procedures in member states when aligning national laws with European ones, and that member states need to make greater efforts.
Von der Leyen said that a political agreement has been reached in the Union on a roadmap to strengthen competitiveness called “One Europe, One Market.”
“And by the end of the year, together we can and must complete this historic reform of the single market,” said the President of the European Commission.
She added that the Commission will propose a new package of banking measures focused on simplifying procedures and reducing fragmentation.
“We need a banking system built for growth, not just for stability,” said von der Leyen.
Regarding the economic relationship with China and the deficit the Union has in trade with it, the President of the Commission stated that Europe will “use all available means” to establish balance in its relationship with China.
“Words are good, but actions are better,” said von der Leyen.
Regarding the development and impact of artificial intelligence (AI), she stated that AI should help in learning, skills development, healthcare, and work, and that it should be a tool that will not replace human activity.
Von der Leyen said that Europe, together with the United Kingdom, Canada, and other partners, will cooperate on the assessment of artificial intelligence models, early warning systems, and safety, and added that Europe needs its own AI capacities.
