Spain Wins World Cup, Torres Decides Final Against Argentina

The Spanish national football team is the new world champion. In the grand final of the 2026 World Cup, played at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the European champion defeated the defending champion Argentina after extra time with a score of 1:0, with the decisive goal scored by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute.

The Spaniards were the better side for almost the entire 120 minutes, creating chances and dominating possession, while Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez kept his team alive for a long time with brilliant saves. The World Cup final was opened with a spectacular closing ceremony featuring performances by Jennifer Hudson, Robbie Williams, Post Malone, and Hollywood actor Tom Cruise.

„Today, only two teams remain – Spain and Argentina. Let’s celebrate a tournament that has united the world,“ Cruise told tens of thousands of spectators.

The stands were filled with numerous celebrities from the worlds of sports, music, and politics, including the President of the United States Donald Trump and his wife Melania, whose presence prompted security measures to be raised to the highest level.

Spain Dominated from the Very Start

The European champion immediately took the initiative.

As early as the fifth minute, Dani Olmo found Lamine Yamal, whose shot was saved by Emiliano Martinez. Argentina responded through Julian Alvarez and Lionel Messi, but Unai Simon’s timely intervention prevented any serious danger.

Until the end of the first half, Spain continued to control the game. Yamal, Olmo, Oyarzabal, and Cucurella tried to find a way to the net, but Martinez repeatedly proved why he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

A major problem for Argentina occurred at the end of the first half when Lisandro Martinez had to leave the pitch due to injury, replaced by the experienced Nicolas Otamendi.

Halftime Turned into a Musical Spectacle

The break between the two halves lasted as long as 27 minutes and was turned into a major musical show.

The audience was entertained by Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, the group BTS, and the band Coldplay, while special attention was drawn by legendary Brazilian footballers Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, who appeared on stage together with Madonna. The famous Muppet puppets from the Sesame Street series also took part in the program.

Martinez Kept Argentina Alive

The second half did not change the balance of power.

Spain continued to create chances through Alex Baena, Dani Olmo, Pedri, Yamal, Ferran Torres, and Aymeric Laporte, but Emiliano Martinez almost single-handedly kept Argentina in the game.

The statistics clearly showed the European champion’s dominance. The Spaniards created chance after chance, while Argentina practically failed to seriously threaten Unai Simon’s goal.

The drama peaked at the end of regular time when Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card for a rough tackle on Pau Cubarsi, leaving Argentina with ten men.

In stoppage time, Yamal aimed for the top corner from a free kick, but Martinez once again intervened spectacularly.

The regular part ended goalless, even though Spain had as many as 15 shots, ten of which were on target, while Argentina did not have a single shot on target.

Ferran Torres Makes History

Extra time continued to bring excitement.

In the 96th minute, Nico Williams had a goal disallowed due to a previous foul by Mikel Merino on Otamendi.

Just ten minutes later came the decisive moment.

Lamine Yamal found Pedro Porro, who crossed to the far post. Nico Williams headed the ball down to Ferran Torres, and the Spanish striker powerfully struck from eight meters to make it 1:0 and spark huge celebrations for “La Roja.”

Torres later found the net again, but the goal was rightly disallowed for offside.

Argentina tried to equalize through Giuliano Simeone in the closing stages, but failed to do so.

Historic Success for Spain

With this triumph, Spain won its second world championship title in history, after their success in 2010.

In addition, they became the first country in football history to simultaneously hold the men’s and women’s world champion titles, while also being the current European champion.

Argentina remains on three world titles, won in 1978, 1986, and 2022.

Rodri Best Player of the Tournament, Mbappe Wins Golden Boot

After the final, individual awards were also presented.

Spain captain Rodri was named the best footballer of the World Cup and won the tournament’s Golden Ball.

The Silver Ball went to Lionel Messi, while the Bronze Ball was awarded to Kylian Mbappe.

The French striker won the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer with ten goals and four assists, becoming the first player since Gerd Muller in 1970 to score ten goals at a single World Cup. Mbappe thus finished as the top scorer at the World Cup for the second time in a row, after scoring eight goals in Qatar in 2022.

Pau Cubarsi was named the best young player, while the award for best goalkeeper of the tournament went to Unai Simon, who conceded only one goal throughout the tournament.

De la Fuente: This Generation Is the Pride of Spain

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente could not hide his emotions after the historic success.

– I think the match should have been decided much earlier. Martinez’s saves prevented us from winning in regular time, but this is a World Cup final and you have to endure until the end. I am especially proud of this generation of players who grew up together, showed what it means to be a family, and brought Spain a new reason for pride – said De la Fuente.

He emphasized that the team has won everything there is to win and that unity was the key to this great success.

Spain has thus crowned one of the most successful generations in its history and, in impressive fashion, combined the European and world titles, confirming its status as currently the best national football team in the world.
