The envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump for the Middle East, Jared Kushner, has arrived in Israel, where he is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the day, reports the BBC.
Kushner is in Israel following talks with Hamas on the implementation of a peace plan for Gaza supported by the United States.
Last month, Trump’s Peace Committee announced that it had reached an agreement on the „complete disarmament“ of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza.
Last week, Israel rejected Trump’s 15-point plan, which also envisions the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the reconstruction of Gaza under a new Palestinian civil administration.
Eight Muslim countries yesterday issued a statement condemning Israel’s rejection of the proposal.
A Palestinian official told the BBC that Kushner, who is also Trump’s son-in-law, met yesterday in Egypt with a delegation led by the new Hamas leader, Khalil al-Hayya.
In a statement, Hamas called on mediators and the Peace Committee to „compel“ Israel to approve the roadmap for the next steps.
