Milos Pavlovic, a student at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Medicine, stated that the group he leads — which presents itself as “students who want to study” — has received an invitation to meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Monday at 11 AM. They will accept the invitation, he said, and announce their final decision on whether to begin the previously announced hunger strike after the meeting.
“Our delegation will respond to the invitation and attend the meeting, but out of great respect for the president of the Republic and for the support he has given us so far, we will announce our final decision on our next steps tomorrow after the meeting,” Pavlovic said at a press conference in Pionirski Park, where a group claiming to be “students who want to study” has been camped since March 6.
Pavlovic noted that his group had announced six days earlier that they would go on hunger strike if all faculties did not resume regular classes by June 1.
He also said that the president of the Serbian Progressive Party and presidential advisor for regional issues, Milos Vucevic, visited them last night and asked them not to make a final decision on starting the hunger strike before meeting with Vucic.
At the camp in front of the Presidency of Serbia, where the group claiming to be “students who want to study” resides, several individuals have been spotted who are known not to be students — including activists of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, members of football fan groups, and war veterans from the 1990s.
N1 journalists have also obtained evidence that some individuals received daily stipends for staying in the camp.
