Ukraine plans a record defense budget for 2027, as the costs of the war with Russia, which entered its fifth year in February, continue to rise, and the country needs greater financial support from its partners, local officials said, according to the British agency Reuters.
It is projected that Ukraine’s defense expenditures next year will reach 4.89 trillion hryvnias (97 billion euros), which represents an increase of 12 percent compared to 2026. This accounts for approximately two-thirds of the total expenditures in the draft budget for 2027, which amounts to 7.27 trillion hryvnias (142 billion euros), and which was presented to parliament today.
On the other hand, budget revenues are estimated at 5.6 trillion hryvnias (109 billion euros).
“This is the sixth budget during this full-scale war and once again it is larger than the previous one. Over the years, the war has become more expensive,” said Roksolana Pidlasa, chairwoman of the parliamentary budget committee, to the deputies.
The daily costs of the war have risen to 190 million dollars (165 million euros) this year, from 116 million dollars (101 million euros) in 2022, Pidlasa pointed out.
Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko told parliament that Ukraine will need more than 52 billion dollars (45 billion euros) in international financial aid next year.
President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government has secured partner commitments totaling about 20 billion dollars (17 billion euros) and is negotiating ways to finance the remaining amount, Marchenko added.
