After 20 years of construction and more than a decade of planning, Egypt is finally set to open the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, a project worth around one billion dollars. The grand opening, to be held in the shadow of the pyramids, will be attended by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, along with numerous world leaders and guests from across the globe.
This monumental complex, covering 470,000 square meters, is considered the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. It houses more than 50,000 artifacts, including the colossal statue of Ramses II weighing 83 tons, and the 4,500-year-old solar boat of Pharaoh Khufu.
The museum includes 24,000 square meters of permanent exhibition space, a children’s museum, educational and conference facilities, commercial areas, and a modern conservation center. Twelve main galleries guide visitors through Egypt’s history — from prehistoric times to the Roman era.
The museum’s executive director, Ahmed Goneim, emphasized that the new exhibition uses advanced technology and multimedia displays to make Egypt’s heritage more accessible to younger generations, particularly Generation Z.
The opening ceremony had been postponed several times, most recently due to conflicts in the Middle East, but Egypt now sees this project as a strategic investment in cultural tourism, expecting 15,000 to 20,000 visitors per day.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is part of a broader development plan — including a new metro line, airport, and supporting infrastructure — and comes at a time when Egyptian tourism is rebounding, with a record 15.7 million visitors in 2024 and an ambitious goal to double that number by 2032.
According to Egyptian media, artifact security remains a challenge, following recent thefts, including a 3,000-year-old golden pharaoh bracelet.
Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, described the opening as “Egypt’s gift to the world” — a moment when history, architecture, and technology converge to create a new temple of culture.
