The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas stated that the International Criminal Court is a key institution and that the EU has options to ensure its continued operation, following the US announcement of sanctions.
Kallas said that she had spoken with ICC President Tomoko Akane and assessed that the six-month period before the measures take effect leaves room for dialogue. “The EU has always supported the Court and the protection of the ICC remains a priority for the EU,” Kallas stated.
The text also states that the administration of United States President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the Court on the same day that former ICC judge Navi Pillay received the Nobel Prize.
