The European Commission announced that today it paid out 1.24 billion euros as part of the defense component of the Ukraine Support Loan, which totals 90 billion euros.
The money paid out today is for drones, drone interceptors, drone ammunition, and Ukrainian-made missiles.
“Today’s payment will help strengthen the Ukrainian military industry and Ukraine’s ability to defend itself and protect its people and infrastructure,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a statement, while, as she said, “Russia continues its deliberate strategy of terrorizing, trying to make life unbearable for Ukrainians.”
The 90 billion euro Ukraine Support Loan consists of 60 billion for defense and 30 billion in financial assistance to its budget for this year and next year.
For this year, a payment of 28.3 billion euros is planned for military purposes, and payments will continue in the coming weeks, the statement said.
In addition, by the end of this year, Ukraine will have another 32.5 billion euros at its disposal. Of this, 28.1 billion is from the Ukraine Support Loan, consisting of 15.4 billion euros for the Ukrainian military industry and 12.7 billion in budget support.
In addition, based on the original instrument for Ukraine for this year, Kyiv has 4.4 billion euros in budget support available, which for this year, together with the Loan money, means more than 17 billion euros just for budget support. Payment depends on the fulfillment of agreed conditions from the Ukraine Plan and the Memorandum of Understanding.
The European Commission states that the EU and its member states have provided Ukraine with a total of 228.7 billion euros in support since 2022, including 3.8 billion euros from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets.
