European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced today that the European Union (EU) is providing support to Colombia after an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 killed more than 100 people and destroyed thousands of buildings and homes.
„As search and rescue operations continue, the EU is providing support to Colombia wherever possible,“ von der Leyen wrote on X.
She stated that the EU is making two million euros in aid available to communities in the hardest-hit areas.
„After Colombia activated the Civil Protection Mechanism, we are working to align the aid with needs on the ground,“ the post said.
This is European solidarity, von der Leyen concluded in a post in Spanish.
On Monday, Colombia was struck by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in which at least 164 people were killed.
The quake shook Cali, Quibdó, Pereira, and numerous other cities and towns, and it was reported that around 1,600 buildings were damaged or destroyed.
