Typhoon Bavi, moving between China, Taiwan, and Japan, brought strong winds and heavy rains to eastern parts of China today and made landfall in Zhejiang Province.
The typhoon weakened today and the tropical storm has calmed, with winds at the center blowing at 101 kilometers per hour, according to data from the Chinese National Meteorological Center.
Bavi is expected to continue moving northwest, across eastern China.
The typhoon passed north of Taiwan yesterday but did not make landfall.
The Taiwan Fire Department reported that by this morning at least 134 people had been injured across the island.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected to hit many cities in eastern China today, according to the national meteorological service.
More than 290,000 people have been evacuated from at-risk areas of Shanghai, local media report.
Authorities in Zhejiang have evacuated about 2.2 million residents, while more than 180,000 people have been rescued in Fujian Province.
Shanghai’s Pudong and Hongqiao airports could cancel around 653 incoming flights, according to the Xinhua agency.
According to the state broadcaster CCTV, in the coastal city of Yueqing in Zhejiang Province, more than 1,300 trees have been knocked down, at least 700 of which were uprooted.
