France is preparing for a turbulent week following protests held on Saturday organized over the high cost of living and demands for better schooling conditions for high school students, reported the British agency Reuters, adding that the protests took place in a “mostly peaceful” atmosphere, although tensions rose as participants dispersed.
For Thursday, November 5, a day of strikes and protests has been scheduled across the country, which will include both the private and public sectors.
Meanwhile, the organization “High School Students” today called for a blockade of high schools starting tomorrow, while the High School Students’ Union and the Student Union called for blockades of high schools and universities on Tuesday and Thursday.
“No, we will not all return to classes just because the president (Emmanuel Macron) claims he has heard us. In reality, he has not heard us at all. He has offered us almost nothing,” said representatives of the organization High School Students “Les Lycéens!”.
“Of course we are calling for blockades. High schools will be blocked starting tomorrow, and that is the point of the strike—to cause disruption,” they said, criticizing the government’s “superficial” approach.
However, some unions believe these measures are insufficient and are calling for mass mobilization on Thursday.
