German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated on Sunday that there are indications the attack near the Pride Parade in Berlin was an Islamist terrorist attack.
In the attack, which occurred last night, one person was killed and several dozen people were injured.
The suspect, Abdul Balut, a German citizen of Lebanese origin, remains at large.
German authorities have issued a warrant and warned citizens not to approach him, as he is considered armed and dangerous.
According to police and prosecutors, the suspect drove a van into a crowd in Tiergarten park near the final celebration of the Pride Parade, after which several people were attacked with a bladed weapon. Minister Dobrindt stated that it is believed a machete was used in the attack.
Police announced that the suspect is known to security services due to ties with Islamist circles in Berlin, but the motive for the attack has not yet been officially determined.
During the night, a police operation was carried out and an apartment in the Berlin district of Schöneberg was searched, but the suspect was not found.
Police earlier announced that a white van drove into Tiergarten park last night, struck several people, and then crashed into a tree.
At the time of the attack, the final celebration of the Pride Parade was taking place nearby, at the Brandenburg Gate.
