The European Union today approved its largest package of sanctions against Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine, aiming to hinder the production of ballistic missiles, announced EU High Representative Kaja Kallas.
Foreign ministers of the member states approved the package at a meeting in Luxembourg, adding 1,600 new items targeting the “Russian military-industrial complex.” Kallas stated that “more than half of the items are related to the ballistic missile production chain.”
The adoption of the package was conditioned on the removal of Russian businessmen Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the list of sanctioned individuals, which was ultimately accepted. Kallas assessed that “with this package, we are making the production of weapons with which Russia kills Ukrainians significantly harder, slower, and more expensive.”
The sanctions adopted today are set to last three years, after which renewal will require approval.
