Belgium and Rwanda have restored diplomatic relations, 18 months after a break caused by tensions between the two countries over the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
As reported today by the British agency Reuters, officials from both countries shared on social media photographs showing the foreign ministers of Belgium and Rwanda sitting next to each other in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The foreign ministers of Belgium and Rwanda, Maxime Prevot and Olivier Nduhungirehe, have had informal contacts in recent months and participated in a series of meetings, which enabled them to resolve differences and misunderstandings in a “constructive” manner, according to a joint statement from the authorities of the two countries.
They also thanked Qatar for facilitating the first bilateral meeting, which took place in June 2025.
Belgium and Rwanda have expressed their intention to reopen their embassies soon.
