The Government of the United Kingdom today approved a natural gas exploitation project off the coast of Scotland, despite opposition from environmental organizations.
The government explained that the project will improve energy security as the country transitions to renewable energy sources.
Although the project at the Jackdaw gas field, east of Aberdeen, was originally approved in 2022, its implementation was halted after a Scottish court ruled that the government had not taken into account the negative impact on the environment.
After an additional assessment, Energy Minister Mijata Fanbule approved the project today.
“The Jackdaw project will contribute to a ‘greener’ gas network in the United Kingdom during a key period of transition, that is, moving away from fossil fuels,” the British Ministry of Energy said in a statement.
