The European Parliament has once again condemned the death penalty and called on all countries that still apply it to abolish it, introducing a moratorium on executions as a first step, announced the Chairman of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights, Mounir Satouri.
Satouri warned that the number of executions during 2025 increased by 78 percent compared to 2024 and reached the highest level since 1981, adding that the actual number could be significantly higher due to a lack of reliable data from certain countries.
According to him, executions remain concentrated in a small number of countries, including China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the United States of America.
Satouri stated that 114 countries have abolished the death penalty for all crimes, with the most recent example being Lebanon, which abolished it in August 2026.
