The EU Council, within the framework of the European Peace Facility (EPF), today approved assistance of ten million euros to strengthen the operational capacities and readiness of the Balkan Medical Task Force (BMTF).
BMTF brings together the military medical capacities of the EU’s regional partners to provide military medical support for international operations.
According to the EU Council, the Fund’s assistance measures will strengthen BMTF’s capacity to protect the civilian population in cases of natural or man-made disasters.
Balkan Medical Task Force already participates in military exercises to train personnel and enhance operational readiness and interoperability, which represents a concrete example of regional cooperation in the field of defense.
The Council’s statement emphasizes that the decision on assistance highlights the EU’s and its members’ continued engagement with Western Balkan partners in the area of security and defense.
“BMTF and the armed forces of the partners will receive equipment for field hospitals, military medical vehicles, and communication and information systems, as well as, where necessary, accompanying resources and services, including technical training,” the Council stated.
With the new measure, the total EU assistance to the Balkan Medical Task Force within the European Peace Facility has reached 16 million euros.
The Fund was established in 2021 to finance actions within the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy aimed at conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and strengthening international security and stability.
