The number of people infected with Ebola in Congo has surpassed 5,000, the country’s government announced today.
Data from the Congolese Ministry of Health indicate that as of the beginning of this week, 5,021 cases have been recorded, including 2,378 fatalities.

This epidemic has claimed more lives and spread faster than any other outbreak in history.
Since the first case was detected, the disease has spread about three times faster than during the West African epidemic from 2014 to 2016, which was the deadliest recorded Ebola outbreak, with more than 11,000 deaths.
