German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) announced today that it will ban the consumption of alcohol at all its stations in order to improve safety and cleanliness for employees and passengers, with exceptions such as bars and restaurants.
The company stated that the ban will be gradually implemented at all 5,400 stations in Germany, to be completed by October 15.
Bans have already been introduced at 30 stations, including those in Cologne, Hamburg, and Munich.
On September 1, two stations in Berlin, as well as several others, will join them before the measure is expanded nationwide.
Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla stated that „we have too often noticed that violence increases where too much alcohol is consumed.“
She referred to what she described as a „brutal and senseless attack“ that occurred last week when a passenger under the influence of alcohol punched and kicked a security guard during a ticket inspection, after which he fell through the door of a moving train and was injured.
Those who violate the ban will be removed from the stations, and repeat offenders could receive a permanent ban from access, according to the new measures.
The railway stated that hospitality establishments at stations will be exempt from the ban, and that passengers will still be allowed to carry closed bottles and cans of alcohol in their luggage or shopping bags.
The ban will not apply to the trains themselves, given that alcoholic beverages are sold in restaurant cars on long-distance routes.
