The European Union is calling for a transparent and credible investigation into allegations that sonic weapons were used against demonstrators during the March 15 protest in Belgrade, said European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier.
In response to ongoing proceedings regarding the alleged use of sonic weapons during the March 15 protest last year, Mercier stated that „the EU is closely monitoring the situation and reiterates its call for a credible and transparent investigation,“ reports Radio Television of Serbia (RTS).
Mercier recalled that in April 2025, the European Court of Human Rights ordered Serbia to implement interim measures requiring authorities to prevent any future use of sonic devices for crowd control, as well as to ensure that individuals participating in public debate about the alleged use of such weapons are not prosecuted.
He added that the European Commission expects any investigation to be conducted fully in accordance with the law, without political pressure or influence, and that the fundamental rights of all citizens, including freedom of assembly and freedom of expression, are respected.
Mercier also stated that European human rights protection standards oblige authorities to protect participants in public gatherings from injury and violence.
