More than 1,000 people have been killed in floods in Nepal and China, it was announced today.
The Nepalese emergency agency reported that 987 deaths have been recorded, while 3,916 people are listed as missing, including 583 foreign nationals.
Chinese authorities, in their latest report published yesterday, reported 16 fatalities.
The flash floods that began last week were caused by the collapse of rocks beneath a glacier in the Himalayas.
Scientists analyzing satellite images determined that the ground beneath the glacier collapsed, dragging part of the glacier itself with it.
The rockslide was so powerful that it was registered as a seismic event with a magnitude of 5.2.
The rocks and meltwater then suddenly raised the level of rivers in the valleys below, creating a torrent that swept downstream through Tibet and Nepal, carrying away buildings, bridges, and land.
