European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated in Brussels that today is a „Super Tuesday“ for the enlargement of the European Union (EU) due to accession conferences with four candidate countries on the same day.
Kos posted on X that so many conferences being held on the same day is happening for the first time in more than 20 years, with Montenegro, Ukraine, Moldova, and Albania participating today.
„Our frontrunners Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, and Montenegro are all making major steps forward,“ Kos stated, adding that Montenegro is at the head of this group as the most advanced country in the accession negotiations.
The Commissioner noted that Ukraine and Moldova are opening Cluster 6 „which covers areas such as defense and security, where the arguments for their EU membership are particularly strong.“
„Albania will close its first chapters, and Montenegro is firmly in the final phase of formal negotiations, having closed 18 out of 33 chapters,“ she added.
Kos said that today’s momentum must be turned into „concrete results on the ground.“
„Today is a day both for celebration and for looking to the future. We have the support of the member states, but only if the candidate countries fulfill the conditions,“ she concluded.
