The European Union has once again reaffirmed its support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine ahead of the 35th anniversary of its independence, which will be marked on August 24.
The European Commission stated that the EU will continue to support Ukraine in its efforts to achieve, as noted, a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, as well as on its path toward the European Union.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022, the EU and its member states have provided a total of €220.2 billion in humanitarian, financial, and military aid to Ukraine, they wrote in the statement.
The European Commission also stated that in recent months the EU has provided the first disbursements under a €90 billion support loan for Ukraine, intended to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities and its reconstruction.
In the meantime, it has also adopted the 21st package of sanctions against Russia, further restricting Moscow’s ability to finance the war and carry out attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure.
„The EU is leading efforts to ensure the reconstruction and long-term investment in the Ukrainian economy, which was also confirmed at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in June. It plays a key role in securing the return of Ukrainian children who have been forcibly relocated or deported by Russia, as well as in holding Russia accountable for its crimes, among other things through the International Claims Commission and the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine,“ they stated.
