Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev convened an emergency meeting and summoned Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova for talks after two merchant ships were hit by drones off the Bulgarian Black Sea coast; 11 crew members are reported missing, one sailor has been rescued, while the other ship was either towed or evacuated with the help of rescue teams.
Radev stated that, although there is no conclusive evidence of responsibility by “any side,” “logic suggests that the outcome benefits the Russian Federation.” Ukraine has directly accused Russia of the latest attacks, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that “the Black Sea is becoming ‘another front of escalation in Russia’s war in Ukraine'” and called for accountability for those responsible.
Bulgaria has requested technical assistance from NATO and the EU in investigating previous attacks, and Radev has also discussed the case with Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte. The Russian military has not publicly commented on these attacks, while some statements have suggested that it could be a provocation by a third party.
