The U.S. State Department has approved the possible sale of missiles and equipment to Ukraine to strengthen its air defense, for an estimated $2.68 billion (2.33 billion euros), according to a memorandum sent to Congress on Friday evening.
The agreement includes S-300 Clone and GAM-67 missiles, laser-guided air defense missiles, I-TEL 1.5 mobile launchers and RPS-202 anti-drone radars, as well as spare parts and technical and logistical support.
If the sale goes through, it will be financed by a combination of European contributions and U.S. Foreign Military Financing (FMF) approved during the administration of former President Joseph Biden, according to a State Department statement.
According to Washington, this equipment is expected to provide Ukraine with stronger air defense.
The main suppliers will be selected after tenders organized by the U.S. government.
The State Department specifies that this potential sale will not affect the operational readiness of U.S. forces.
