Minister Pavkov: Plan for the Restoration of Fire-Devastated Deliblato Sands Area Expected Next Week

Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection Sara Pavkov announced today that a proposal for the restoration plan for the fire-devastated area of the Special Nature Reserve „Deliblato Sands“ for the period 2027–2031 can be expected within a week, in order to begin preparations for remediation as soon as possible.

During her visit to Deliblato Sands, the minister stated that a concrete remediation plan had been agreed upon together with experts, professors, and representatives of provincial and national institutions, the ministry said in a statement.

It was pointed out that Pavkov spoke with representatives of the relevant services, managers, the professional public, and institutions about the current situation and the next steps in remediation.

Pavkov emphasized that the most important thing, through joint engagement and coordinated action of all relevant services, was to prevent endangerment of people, households, and the natural values of this protected area.

„Efforts were made together on the ground to prevent any negative consequences to property, and above all, to prevent any threat to human lives. We owe great gratitude to all members of the Sector for Emergency Situations, the Serbian Army, volunteer fire brigades, associations, and the managers of Vojvodinašume for their superhuman efforts to bring the fire in the Special Nature Reserve ‘Deliblato Sands’ under control,“ Pavkov said.

She stated that the goal is to restore nature so that it is more resilient to high temperatures and the consequences of climate change.

„Today we also brought additional equipment in the form of 44 fire-fighting backpacks, which will greatly help in areas where fire trucks cannot reach. At the same time, the Ministry of Environmental Protection will provide additional subsidies for protected areas so that managers can implement the necessary remediation and restoration measures and continue to work in accordance with expert plans,“ the minister said.
