The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs today warned Bulgaria not to allow the United States to use its territory for military operations against Iran.
The Bulgarian government earlier announced that it would seek parliamentary approval to station up to eight US tanker aircraft at an air base in the country, a NATO and EU member, Reuters reports.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghei said that any activity facilitating US attacks on Iran is tantamount to complicity in what he called „aggression and war crimes,“ according to Iranian state media.
Baghei called on Bulgaria not to become „an accomplice of aggressors and lawbreakers,“ media reported.
Tanker aircraft are primarily used to refuel other aircraft in flight.
The Bulgarian government intends to station US aircraft at the Bezmer military base, 260 kilometers southeast of Sofia.
The US and Iran have intensified attacks since the collapse of the Memorandum of Understanding on a temporary ceasefire concluded a month ago, raising the possibility of a return to their broader mutual conflict.
