Serbia must demonstrate genuine commitment to EU values, the European Parliament wrote today in a post on the X network.
„Progress towards EU membership is only possible with rule of law reforms and stronger democratic standards,“ the post states.
It adds that Serbia „must normalize relations with Kosovo“ and emphasizes that „free and fair elections are necessary to resolve the political crisis.“
Alongside the brief post, basic data about Serbia is included— that it has been an official candidate for EU membership since 2012, that its GDP per capita is 13,526 euros, and that it has a population of 6.6 million.
An additional post includes the statement issued by the EP on July 8 following the adoption of the resolution on Serbia.
The resolution assesses that Serbia has made limited or no progress in many negotiating chapters and reiterates that accession negotiations with the EU should advance only on the basis of measurable and sustainable progress, particularly in the areas of rule of law, the fight against corruption and organized crime, judicial independence, media freedom, and public administration reform.
