French citizens will go to the polls for the presidential elections on April 18 and May 2, 2027, officials announced today.
The decision has not yet been formalized, and details are expected to be released today after the government meeting, according to the Brussels-based portal Politico.
Incumbent President Emmanuel Macron is prohibited from running for a third consecutive presidential term, and the competition for his position is numerous.
Among the candidates are two of Macron’s former prime ministers, Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal, as well as far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
The favorite in the vote is expected to be the candidate from the far-right National Rally party.
The party is deciding whether its long-time leader Marine Le Pen or rising star Jordan Bardella will run for president, while the court has yet to rule on Le Pen’s appeal of her conviction for misappropriation of European Union funds and a five-year ban on holding public office.
