Thousands of students and their supporters staged a protest in Belgrade to demand elections on Friday.
The protest was held under the slogan We Want Elections in the center of the Serbian capital.
Student speakers told the crowd that early parliamentary elections as soon as possible is the way to meet their demands and launch reforms. They said that Serbia could be a country which respects life, dignity, freedom and equality where corruption is not tolerated and violence is punished.
“There’s no going back, this is our country and our universities,” they said.
The protesters marched through central Belgrade before hearing the student speakers.
Loud music blared from the tent camp in front of the Serbian Presidency building while the protesters walked past. The protesters whistled and booed the residents of the tent camp, dubbed Caciland (pronounced Tchatzyland). A police cordon was deployed around the park where the tents have been put up. The nickname Caci was given to the regime supporters claiming to be students in the tent camp after they misspelled the word for pupil in Cyrillic.
