In Taiwan today, schools and stores were closed, and hundreds of flights were canceled as Typhoon Champi, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, passed by the island.
Earlier this week, the typhoon reached its peak with winds of 298 kilometers per hour. As it approached Taiwan from the southwest, it weakened to 155 kilometers per hour.
According to forecasts, the center of the storm will remain over the sea as it passes by the northeastern part of the island, after which it will continue moving north, toward the southwestern Japanese islands.
Taiwan’s meteorological service has urged residents in coastal areas to avoid outdoor activities.
About 1,300 people have been evacuated from endangered areas.
