U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Donald Trump will use a period of up to 60 days to assess the economic impact of the sanctions and tariffs related to Russia, which he suspended the previous day, Reuters reports. Trump signed an executive order postponing the implementation of a new, comprehensive package of sanctions against Russia, explaining to Congress that this decision is in the national interest.
The decision made on Friday did not specify how long the postponement would last, but Rubio said that Trump opted for a 60-day “review” period.
The aim of the sanctions package was to deprive Russian President Vladimir Putin of resources Moscow needs to continue the war in Ukraine, as well as to sanction Russian officials, banks, and disrupt the “shadow tanker fleet” that continues to deliver Russian energy products to their destinations.
Last week, Trump reached a surprise agreement in which it was stated that Russia would immediately deliver more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by an additional 500,000 tons in November, and “immediately thereafter” another one million tons. Trump’s diesel deal with Putin has faced sharp criticism from both Republicans and Democrats, who believe it will help Russia in waging war against Ukraine.
