Citizens in the central and northern parts of Lithuania spent about an hour this morning in shelters due to an unidentified flying object.
While a “red” alert for the danger of an air attack was in effect, NATO aircraft responsible for protection were dispatched to the area, and the airport of Lithuania’s second largest city, Kaunas, was closed, reports Reuters.
Members of the Lithuanian military are investigating whether there are any drone remnants near a village in northern Lithuania, after the flying object disappeared from radar, the crisis management center announced.
It added that the object, which was detected on radar, likely entered Lithuania from Poland.
In its northern neighbor Latvia, a “yellow” alert was issued in certain regions on the border with Lithuania due to what the Latvian military described as a “possible threat.”
Ukrainian drones have, on several occasions in recent months, entered NATO airspace in the Baltic region.
Kyiv stated that the aircraft veered off course due to Russian signal jamming.
