Authorities in Nepal have warned of the possibility of new floods today and called on residents of flooded areas to remain on high alert after water levels in the Botekoshi River rose.
Flood danger warnings were sent to citizens’ mobile phones throughout the morning, while rescue teams worked to clear the main road connecting Kathmandu with one of the areas hardest hit by the catastrophic floods on Wednesday.
The total number of casualties in Nepal and Tibet has risen to 750, while more than 3,000 people are listed as missing, according to the latest data released today.
The Nepalese emergency agency stated that the death toll has risen to 734, while 2,498 people are listed as missing. Chinese authorities have reported 16 dead and 546 missing.
The latest warnings followed after Chinese authorities informed their Nepalese counterparts of increased water flow upstream, said Daram Raj Upreti, Executive Director of Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, to the Associated Press.
However, residents of flooded villages said they are struggling with the almost continuous warnings they have been receiving since the first floods.
„Sometimes they say a flood is coming, so we have to flee to higher ground again, even during the night. It’s also raining. For me, this is really hard. I have a 72-year-old father and a 70-year-old mother. I have to carry them and I am exhausted. This is how it is for those who survived,“ said local resident Govind Shrestha.
