More than 400 people, mostly minors, have been detained in France due to student protests in high schools across the country, the French Minister of the Interior announced.
The protests began a week ago and have spread throughout the country, reports the BBC.
Students are blocking many schools over a range of issues, such as overcrowded classrooms, the burden of an extensive curriculum, and a lack of teaching staff.
At least 10 teachers and several students, as well as 48 police officers, were injured during yesterday’s protests, officials say.
According to data from the Ministry of Education, at least 400 schools have been affected by the protests.
French media reported that demonstrators fired fireworks at the police, who responded with batons and tear gas.
Minister of Education Edouard Geoffray says that students have the right to protest, but condemned the violence.
The high school student protest has gained momentum in recent days. In front of the entrances to many high schools in Paris and other cities, students have set up blockades and banners.
