The Secretary General of the European Democratic Party (EDP), Sandro Goci, stated today that the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party’s electoral list, Aleksandar Vučić, is afraid of the votes of the Serbian diaspora and that the lack of polling stations and the conditions under which Serbian citizens abroad will vote in the snap elections are a deliberate political obstruction, the EDP announced.
“Vučić is afraid of votes he cannot control. When more than 100,000 citizens abroad mobilize to participate in their country’s democratic process, the response of a democratic government should be to facilitate voting. Instead, dozens of cities are left without polling stations, people are required to travel great distances, and others are expected to vote in the middle of the night. This is not just poor organization. It is a deliberate political obstruction,” Goci said, according to the statement.
He added that Serbian citizens living abroad are not second-class voters and that their democratic rights do not become less important outside the borders of Serbia.
“Serbia deserves free, fair, and truly accessible elections, and Europe must closely monitor what is happening ahead of October 25,” Goci said.
EDP stated in the announcement that the conditions under which the Serbian diaspora will vote cannot be viewed as a mere technical issue and “condemns the deliberate obstacles” to voting for Serbian citizens abroad.
“EDP calls on the Serbian authorities and the Republic Electoral Commission to take urgent measures to guarantee the Serbian diaspora a real opportunity to exercise their right to vote,” the statement from the European Democrats reads.
