The Embassy of Ukraine in Serbia today called the misuse of the election campaign in Serbia for disseminating Russian propaganda and attempts to portray Russian aggression as a struggle for spiritual and historical values shared by the Serbian and Russian peoples scandalous.
The Embassy stated that it is responding to statements made by the president of the Serbian-Russian Movement, Slobodan Dimitrijević, at yesterday’s gathering of the Socialist Party of Serbia.
“Attempts to portray the unprovoked aggression of the Russian Federation, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and caused the suffering of millions, as a struggle for spiritual and historical values shared with the Serbian people, represent a cynical manipulation aimed at gaining electoral support through the misuse of issues sensitive to Serbian society,” the embassy said in a statement.
The Embassy recalls that the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was founded in Kyiv almost a thousand years ago and has since become a spiritual center for both Ukraine and the entire Orthodox world. It states that Russia demonstrated its commitment to Orthodox values when it bombed the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on July 15 of this year, causing significant damage to the Assumption Cathedral.
“The misuse of the election campaign in Serbia for disseminating Russian propaganda is scandalous,” the Embassy stated, reminding that such rhetoric is in direct contradiction to the position officially expressed by the leadership of Serbia regarding respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
It expressed the expectation that participants in the electoral process in Serbia will henceforth refrain from using Russian aggression against Ukraine and be aware of the consequences such statements may have on the development of Ukrainian-Serbian relations.
