Two people were killed and dozens injured in a shooting that broke out last night in a small town in the U.S. state of Georgia during a large school celebration and the victory of the school football team.
Some of the approximately thirty injured had gunshot wounds, said Chris Hosey of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation last night, but he could not specify the exact number.
Several hours after his statement, no arrests had been reported in connection with the incident, and authorities did not indicate what the possible motive might be.
The two men who died were 21 and 23 years old and have been identified, said Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy.
The injured are between 14 and 51 years old and were transported to several regional hospitals, Sheriff Peavy said, adding that some of them are in critical condition.
More than 1,000 people were gathered in the small rural town of Vienna, located about 210 kilometers south of Atlanta, when more than 50 shots were heard at at least two locations.
The incident occurred during the weekend school celebrations for Dooly County High School.
According to local media, the celebration attracted people from surrounding counties in southern Georgia after the high school football team’s victory on Friday night.
The director of the school system in that county said that the shooting incident did not occur at a school-organized event, and that schools will be open today but with additional security measures in place.
