French President Emmanuel Macron called on Washington to provide “faster and stronger” cooperation to Ukraine during a meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the Parisian daily Le Monde reported this morning.
After the meeting, Macron told reporters that he had a lengthy discussion about “the need to provide our Ukrainian friends with even faster and stronger assistance in the form of interceptor missiles.”
The French president also mentioned initiatives that could be undertaken “to find a moratorium on energy issues.”
“It is clear that today we must help the Ukrainian energy system and the situation in the entire region,” Macron emphasized, without specifying whether this moratorium would also apply to Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.
On Monday, Trump said on social media that Russia had “lost control of its diesel industry because of the war with Ukraine.”
“This ridiculous, endless war with Ukraine must be stopped,” Trump added.
The meeting between Trump and Macron took place in Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue. According to one of those present, the American president also wanted to receive his guest in his apartment.
Before the meeting, Macron promised to “speak openly” with Donald Trump in an attempt to “steer him toward the right decisions,” especially regarding Ukraine.
The French side aimed to try to convince Trump to “maintain support for Ukraine and to increase pressure on Russia,” Le Monde added.
