Israelis are voting today in parliamentary elections that are largely seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership following the attack by the Palestinian movement Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, as well as the wars that have since shaken the Middle East.
Public opinion polls indicate an uncertain race with no clear winner in sight.
Israelis vote for political parties. These parties then form alliances to create a majority coalition.
Today, Israelis will decide whether to once again place their trust in Netanyahu, who over the past four years has led the most right-wing government in his country’s history, or to bring to power a more centrist-oriented coalition led by General Gadi Eisenkot.
No party has so far managed to win a majority of 61 seats in the parliament, the Knesset, which has 120 members.
