Iran has reiterated its conditions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz following U.S. President Donald Trump’s rejection of their proposal, according to reports from global agencies.
“Our conditions are clear, and any move toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz depends on the fulfillment of those conditions; we will not change that position,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, as reported yesterday by Iranian state television.
Araghchi added that Iran has never closed the door to diplomacy or negotiations, but has also never given up its rights.
Iran announced on Friday that it had submitted a proposal to the U.S. regarding the opening of this key strait within seven days of its acceptance, but U.S. President Donald Trump rejected it.
Yesterday, Trump told reporters upon leaving the White House that he “rejects” their proposal, claiming that Iranian leaders want the agreement because, as he pointed out, “they are losing the war.”
The U.S. President yesterday published a picture of the Strait of Hormuz with the message “Trump’s Strait,” shortly after Iran proposed an agreement to open the waterway within seven days, provided the U.S. meets certain demands.
Despite Trump’s public statements, intermediaries involved in U.S.-Iranian negotiations have not officially conveyed that the U.S. is rejecting the plan, reports Reuters.
