The European Union stated today that it regrets that the United States has, for the second consecutive year, decided to refuse entry visas to members of the Palestinian delegation ahead of the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which begins in New York on Tuesday.
In a statement from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the US is called upon to reconsider its decision, citing existing agreements with the UN regarding its headquarters and the obligations of the US as the host country.
The State Department announced this week that, ahead of the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly, it will extend measures denying visas to officials of the Palestinian Authority and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization, including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Last year, the US refused to issue visas to Abbas and 80 Palestinian officials ahead of the UN General Assembly.
The UN has announced that this year as well, Abbas will be allowed to address the General Assembly via video link.
