Belgian police today used tear gas and pepper spray during clashes with anti-government protesters in Brussels, the British agency Reuters reported, adding that the demonstrators are demanding better conditions in the education system.
The clashes occurred after several hundred people, mostly young, gathered as part of a series of protests that have been taking place in recent months.
Participants demanded greater investment in education and accused the police of excessive use of force.
These clashes were significantly smaller in scale and less violent than those that occurred last week in Belgium, as well as in neighboring France.
Brussels police announced late in the afternoon that there were no major incidents. They stated that measures were taken “to ensure the maintenance of public order and the safety of all citizens.”
The statement added that police temporarily detained five people for disturbing public order, while another four were held for possession of prohibited weapons and inciting unrest.
