The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the European Union will not lift sanctions on Russia until Russia ends the war and that it is necessary to increase pressure on Moscow.
Upon arriving at the European Council meeting, von der Leyen said: “One thing is absolutely clear, we will not lift any sanctions on Russia until it ends the war.” She stated that the Union “supports the energy truce” declared by U.S. President Donald Trump, but that she saw Russia “did not respect it for even a minute” and intensified its attacks.
The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, stated that “now is not the time to withdraw support for Ukraine” and that now is the time to increase support and pressure on Russia.
Von der Leyen announced that the European Council will discuss Ukraine’s progress on its path to the EU, securing aid for the upcoming winter, and Ukraine’s financial needs for this and next year, noting that Russia is trying to destroy the country’s energy and water infrastructure.
