U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States (US) relocated its bombers from RAF Fairford due to “certain threats” directed at that base in the United Kingdom.
While speaking last night with a group of reporters outside the White House, Trump was asked whether a “specific threat” prompted the US to withdraw its bombers from the air base.
“Yes, I think you could say that. They didn’t leave by accident, there were certain threats. And instead of provoking the enemy, we will defeat him. But why would we leave them there? That’s why we moved them a bit. Not very far,” Trump said.
He added that Washington “actually knows who made the threat,” but did not confirm who it was.
The Pentagon confirmed on Sunday that it had returned the bombers to their home bases in the US. It is believed there were about a dozen B-1 type aircraft.
The nature of the threat that led to the removal of the aircraft from RAF Fairford remains unclear, but sources in Washington told the BBC that the decision may be related to possible attempts at sabotage or attacks on the expensive aircraft in the event of renewed hostilities with Iran.
