The French Minister for Higher Education and Research, Philippe Baptiste, stated today that around 40 higher education institutions will experience disruptions today due to a wave of high school student protests across the country.
“About 40 higher education institutions are facing disruptions today,” Baptiste told Sud Radio.
Regarding “troublemakers infiltrating the movement, who are mostly extremely violent,” Baptiste said that “the security forces have shown great restraint and proportionality in dealing with this harsh movement involving minors.”
The minister assessed that the radically left-wing party France Unbowed “poured oil on the fire and is trying to take control of the movement.”
Baptiste believes that this party bears great responsibility for the movement and the violence accompanying the blockades, violence he described as – heinous.
Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon announced that the Senate will consider a bill on October 27 under which troublemakers would bear the costs of the damage they caused.
She announced that the bill will have its first reading in the Senate on October 27, speaking to Europe 1 radio, in the context of the violence accompanying the high school student protests.
According to her, the bill introduces a form of collective responsibility by allowing authorities to charge any member of a group responsible for material damage for the costs, including through the suspension of part of social benefits.
