French President Emmanuel Macron is on a state visit to Spain today and tomorrow, where he will meet with King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, France Info radio reported.
According to the Élysée Palace, Macron will discuss “important European and international issues, particularly the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East” with the Spanish prime minister.
“This is the first state visit by a French president to Spain since 2009, which illustrates the depth of the ties that unite our two countries, as well as the scope of their cooperation,” the French presidency said in a statement.
As part of the visit, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will host a formal dinner in Macron’s honor.
“Both countries share a common commitment to protecting democracy and young people, especially in the face of challenges posed by social networks and artificial intelligence,” the Élysée Palace emphasized.
The last visit by a French president to Spain, although a working one, was in January 2023.
At that time, Macron signed a friendship agreement with Sanchez, which Spain has not yet ratified due to opposition from the Spanish right to some of its provisions.
Macron also traveled to Seville last summer to participate in the United Nations Conference on Financing for Development.
