Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing at a pace that no one can keep up with, warned United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, emphasizing the need for globally coordinated rules to limit risks, especially for children.
„Technology capable of reshaping economies, changing the world of work, influencing elections, and overturning the balance in security matters is being deployed faster than anyone, including those developing it, can keep up with,“ Antonio Guterres said on Monday at the opening of the first two-day UN Global Summit on AI in Geneva.
„Innovation needs safeguards. If AI is to be powerful, it must be regulated,“ Guterres told delegates at the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, which is being held in Switzerland over two days.
The aim of this first summit is not to conclude an agreement, but to discuss how to establish rules to mitigate the potential risks associated with AI, while also harnessing the opportunities it offers.
Delegates are considering a report prepared by a panel of 40 independent scientific experts, supported by the UN, which will present the findings of the first global, independent scientific assessment of artificial intelligence.
A more comprehensive report is planned for next year, coinciding with the second global summit on this topic, which is expected to be held in New York.
